Westgate-on-Sea is bordered by the town of Margate to the east and Birchington-on-Sea to the west. The town is built beside the two sandy bays of St Mildred’ Bay and West Bay. The larger of the beaches is at St Mildred’s Bay where you can hire beach huts, deckchairs and jet-skis.

In 1914, A Royal Navy Seaplane base was opened by the coast after the outbreak of World War I to defend the Thames Estuary naval towns against attack. It was first used for both seaplanes and landplanes, but due to landing problems a separate landplane base was opened in Manston in 1916. After the war, the seaplane base was decommissioned and the landplane base at Manston eventually became Kent International Airport, which closed in May 2014.

The quaint town centre has several Victorian canopied shops, a library and the three-screen Carlton Cinema. The local shops provide everything needed for everyday living including a butcher, greengrocer and baker. There are also more specialist shops including antique shops. There is also a selection of bars, cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets.

There are primary schools and a Secondary School, Ursuline College situated in Westgate on Sea. Ursuline College was set up in 1904 by a group of Ursuline nuns who fled from France as they were banned from teaching, and set up the College which was originally a convent school.

Westgate-on-Sea has a railway station which runs between Ramsgate and London Vitoria. This is around an hour and forty five minute journey. The station also has trains into London Cannon Street, primarily for business commuting. Local buses run from Westgate-on-Sea to Birchington and Margate and there is a service running between Broadstairs and Canterbury which calls at Westgate. There is easy access to the A299 Thanet Way which then becomes the A2/M2/M25 leading to London.
